Caroline Monnet and Laura Ortman

Caroline Monnet and Laura Ortman present the installation From My House To Yours, the result of a correspondence that they maintained for months from their respective homes in Montreal and New York.

Through exchanges of letters, which also included images drawn from previous projects, audio recordings of everyday objects, and musical excerpts composed specifically for the occasion, they explored, metaphorically and materially, the topography of the land that stretched out between them.

Caroline Monnet

Caroline Monnet (Anishinaabe / French, born in Ottawa, lives in Montreal) is interested in representations of identity; her own Algonquian roots and cultural histories serve as fertile ground for her reflections. In her multidisciplinary works, industrial materials and seriality come into dialogue with vernacular objects or motifs.

Laura Ortman

Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache, born in Whiteriver, Arizona, United States; lives in Brooklyn, New York, United States) intertwines music, performance, and visual art to evoke the multiple identities and emotions that she harbours. Ortman, a violinist, takes inspiration from Indigenous musical traditions to compose “sound sculptures” in which her instrument—its strings, the wood, and other parts—are as important as the sounds produced.

MOMENTA Biennale de l’image

Titled Sensing Nature, the 17th edition of the biennale will take place from September 8 to October 24, 2021. Curated by Stefanie Hessler with the collaboration of Camille Georgeson-Usher, Maude Johnson and Himali Singh Soin, this edition of MOMENTA opens the door to multiple interpretations. On the one hand, it assumes a human who is sensing nature, exposed to various modes of perception: sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. On the other hand, it assumes nature sensing back.

Based in Montreal, the biennale has taken place every two years since 1989. Its activities include exhibitions, public events, educational programs, artistic and social collaborations, and more. The mission is to have a sensitive, meaningful impact on the world around us through images.
