Haiti: Chaos and Daily Life

This exhibition has ended

The McCord Museum presents Haiti: Chaos and Daily Life, by photographer Benoit Aquin. In his 40 oversized colour photos, Aquin offers a vision of Haiti today and takes an honest look at the day-to-day lives of Haitians as they cope with the chaos caused by the January 2010 earthquake.

A number of excerpts taken from works by Haitian-born Montreal novelist Dany Laferrière, including quotes from his 2010 memoir, The World is Moving Around Me, complement the exhibition and bring an added perspective to Aquin’s photographs. A brief history of Haiti is also presented at the entry to the exhibition.

Benoit Aquin is a Montreal photojournalist whose ambitious documentary projects take years of preparation and reflect the social and economic implications of our relationship with the environment. In 2008, he received the prestigious Prix Pictet, which recognizes photography dedicated to environmental sustainability, for his series The Chinese Dust Bowl. For more than 20 years, he has contributed to a number of magazines and newspapers, including Voir, Time,Maclean’s, La Presse and The Guardian. His works can also be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
