Mathieu Lapointe

CURATOR, ARCHIVES

I enjoy working with archives because reading them brings one face to face with the strange world of the past—its otherness. At the same time, one discovers its vibrant, eloquent humanity and finds unexpected affinities with bygone generations.

________

Mathieu Lapointe joined the McCord Museum team in 2018 as Curator, Textual Archives. He and his team strive to preserve, develop and promote this collection for the enjoyment of both researchers and the public. Building on projects carried out over the past few years, the department is trying to make the collection more accessible and promote its treasures by digitizing and transcribing archival documents and enhancing their online descriptions. The Shared Emotions project, for example, aims to explore the feelings, sensations and values conveyed in these archives and make these elements easier to locate by improving the indexing.

A historian with additional training in information technology, Mathieu Lapointe earned a PhD in Canadian history from York University in Toronto and a master’s in history from Université de Montréal. As a specialist in Montreal history and Quebec culture and ideologies, he has taken a particular interest in the history of citizen movements, moralizing rhetoric, and public inquiries in 20th century Montreal. His book Nettoyer Montréal : les campagnes de moralité publique, 1940-1954 (Les éditions du Septentrion, 2014) was awarded the Prix Robert-Prévost from the Montreal Historical Society and the Prix de l’Assemblée nationale du Québec from the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française. His recent research on the history of corruption and its role in building Montreal’s reputation led him to produce an historical study for the Charbonneau Commission and collaborate with European researchers.

He has also worked to enhance the public’s knowledge of Montreal’s history. In addition to engaging with the media, he helped organize the exhibition Scandal! Vice, Crime and Morality in Montreal, 1940-1960 at the Centre d’histoire de Montréal and co-authored the exhibition catalogue, and contributed to the history documentary Downtown: The Age of Lights by filmmaker Paul Carvalho.

Formerly the coordinator of the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française, he has taught at Université de Sherbrooke and Carrefour BLE in Montreal. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at McGill, a visiting scholar at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada (MISC) and remains an associate member of McGill’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal (CIRM).
