MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image - The Time of Object - McCord Museum

Workshops for seniors and the general public

September and October, 2019

Celia Perrin Sidarous, Assemblage en bleu (Sphinx), 2019, inkjet print on matte paper. With the permission of the artist and Parisian Laundry, Montréal.

The Time of Objects

During this activity, the participants will have an opportunity to participate in an exchange around the exhibition Celia Perrin Sidarous: The Archivist, in which she explores the historical charges of objects through a photographic and architectural installation. Before the exhibition, the artist explored the McCord Museum’s collection, focusing on both objects and their documentation, selecting elements that intrigued her.

This workshop aims to unite the historical and personal aspects that define objects: objects related to cultural heritage and objects as carriers of narratives. While the museum is regarded as an institution of collective memory and conservation is one of its most essential missions, the experience or “inner life” of objects, as well as the sentimental value associated with them, are absent, where history is written.

The activity is organized around this question: what is forgotten when an object enters the museum? Participants will be invited to share their memories and tell their stories related to the objects from the McCord Museum’s collection.

Celia Perrin Sidarous

Celia Perrin Sidarous creates photographic scenes and settings that interrogate the functions and uses specific to the items they contain—images, objects, structures and architectural components—by creating new links between them.

Drawing in equal measure from the Western discipline of history and the rules of still life, interior decorating, and exhibition design, Perrin Sidarous’s work deconstructs the conditions under which we normally approach objects.

About The Archivist exhibition

The exhibition explores the phantasmagoric and historic charge of objects in creating photographic arrangements. The Archivist shows items from the McCord Museum’s collection next to photographs and objects made or acquired by Celia Perrin Sidarous over many years. Two collections— one institutional and the other personal—enter into dialogue in the gallery.
