Sunday Workshop: Looking After Our Stories in Montreal/Tiohtià:ke

In this civic engagement workshop designed in collaboration with Je suis Montréal, you will lend an ear to the too often untold stories of Chinese, Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities.

Looking at photographs of 19^th and 20^th century Montreal from the Museum’s Photography collection, and watercolours of James Duncan, from the Museum’s Documentary Art collection, you will reflect on the presence or absence of objects and people that support their wellbeing in Montreal.  Your reflection will be facilitated by a bank of magnetic images to juxtapose with these cityscapes, which you will contribute to over the sessions. Each person will share their vision of a Montreal that they consider welcoming to them, while exploring and taking inspiration from others’.

This project is funded by the Ministry of Immigration, Francization and Integration and the city of  Montreal (Interculural Program of Montreal).

• Join the workshop every Sunday until April 21, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Activity presented in French and in English, and recommended for children ages 6 and up.
• Free for children 17 and under. Accompanying adults must purchase a Museum admission ticket.
• Limited seating.
• Location: Atrium of McCord Stewart Museum

Je suis Montréal

Je suis Montréal is a platform that aims to challenge the dominant understanding of Montreal and Quebec identity in order to give a sense of belonging to all QTBIPOC regardless of their colour, language, culture, orientation, gender, and religion. The organization’s goal is to bring forward those who have been historically excluded and often forgotten through art projects, discussions, and panels on themes such as social inclusion, engagement, identity, and belonging. Je suis Montréal believes that art can be used as soft power to change our cultural and social fabric.
