Film Screenings: Poetries of Reality

As part of the International Festival of Ethnographic Films of Quebec, City of Montreal (FIFEQ-MTL), attend the film screenings of The Fourfold, by Alisi Telengut, Talamanca, by Davide Marino, and Berg, by Joke Olthaar.

The screenings will be followed by a workshop-style discussion, in French, with the director of The Fourfold, Alisi Telengut.

The Fourfold

A tribute to Mongolian and Siberian animistic beliefs, The Fourfold is a brilliant and magnificent immersion into Indigenous myths surrounding Ovoos, shamanic cairns used for offerings to non-human materialities. The film’s gesture towards our planetary relationship honours Indigenous Mongolian and Siberian perspectives in a vividly stunning breath of singing colours and textures.

Alisi Telengut is a Mongolian-Canadian filmmaker. Her works have achieved international acclaim and been screened at festivals such as Sundance (USA), TIFF (Canada), and the Canadian Cultural Centre at the Embassy of Canada (France).

The Fourfold, 2020, Canada and Germany, 7 min., Alisi Telengut. Original version with English subtitles.

Talamanca

A sensory immersion in the heart of lush nature, Talamanca documents the daily life of Justo, a farmer, father, adventurer and member of the Bribi people, an Indigenous nation located in the Cordillera de Talamanca in Costa Rica. With this poetic and intimate short film, reality takes on another dimension, where the silences and moments of life become strikingly beautiful and sensitive, while offering a reflection on environmental conservation.

Davide Marino is an anthropologist and filmmaker who captures the wonders of the real and of the everyday through cinematographic devices. He produced this film as part of his doctoral research in Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester’s Granada Centre.

Talamanca, 2020, United Kingdom, 21 min., Davide Marino. Original version with English subtitles.

Berg

With its splendid visual shots, Berg provides a cinematic experience of the sublime. In viewing it, we find ourselves immersed in Slovenian mountains, which are presented to us through the perspectives and adventures of three hikers. Berg, as director Joke Olthaar says, is not a film to watch, but to experience, and one is easily swept away by the beauty and immensity of its landscapes.

Joke Olthaar, who loves hiking in the mountains, has directed several plays about nature, a subject that fascinates her. The Dutchwoman has directed a musical documentary Here is Harry Merry, which was a big hit at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam.

Berg, 2021, Netherlands, 79 min., Joke Olthaar. Original version with English subtitles.

FIFEQ-MTL

The International Festival of Ethnographic Films of Quebec, City of Montreal (FIFEQ-MTL) was founded in 2003 by visual anthropology students at Université de Montréal. A free and unique festival, it is one of the rare platforms to screen and promote ethnographic cinema in Canada.

Thanks to the generous involvement of hundreds of students from Concordia University, McGill University and Université de Montréal and of non-student professionals, the Festival has brought together thousands of viewers, all passionate about cinema and visual anthropology or simply curious about discovering hidden gems of the ethnographic repertoire.
