Documentary Screening: DƏNE YI’INJETL | The Scattering of Man

As part of the International Festival of Ethnographic Films of Quebec, City of Montreal (FIFEQ-MTL), attend the screening the documentary DƏNE YI’INJETL | The Scattering of Man by Luke Gleeson.

The screening will be followed by a discussion, in English, with director Luke Gleeson.

DƏNE YI’INJETL | The Scattering of Man

Between 1960 and 1961, the Province of British Columbia, then led by the Premier W.A.C. Bennett, underwent a series of nationalizations in order to create provincial “crown corporations.” This initiative included the creation of what is now known as BC Hydro. In 1968, BC Hydro completed construction on the W.A.C Bennett Dam and began flooding the Rocky Mountain Trench in northern British Columbia, Canada. The resulting flood greatly impacted the TsayKeh Dene people, who have inhabited this area since time immemorial.

DƏNE YI’INJETL covers the events that took place before and after the flood, told from the perspective of the Tsay Keh Dene Nation. Viewed by many critics as a provincial vanity project, development of the dam was pushed forward and completed ahead of schedule, with little thought given to the resulting impacts that the natural environment and Tsay Keh Dene people would soon face.

DƏNE YI’INJETL | The Scattering of Man, 2021, Canada, 75 min., Luke Gleeson. Original version with French subtitles.

FIFEQ-MTL

The International Festival of Ethnographic Films of Quebec, City of Montreal (FIFEQ-MTL) was founded in 2003 by visual anthropology students at Université de Montréal. A free and unique festival, it is one of the rare platforms to screen and promote ethnographic cinema in Canada.

Thanks to the generous involvement of hundreds of students from Concordia University, McGill University and Université de Montréal and of non-student professionals, the Festival has brought together thousands of viewers, all passionate about cinema and visual anthropology or simply curious about discovering hidden gems of the ethnographic repertoire.
