Introduction

The cariboo gold rush boomed in 1858, when word of a HBC trader's discovery reached San Francisco. By the end of the summer of 1858 over 10,000 miners, mostly American, were working on the Fraser River. This influx of Americans worried the British, who responded by creating the colony of British Columbia.
