GUY LAFLEUR AT THE MCCORD MUSEUM
a special presentation of his private collection
Montreal, April 7, 2001 – Hockey legend Guy Lafleur made a donation to the McCord Museum today. During a special presentation of highlights from his private collection, Mr. Lafleur donated a Canadiens hockey sweater, worn during the 1984-85 season, and signed by Mr. Lafleur and two other hockey legends Jean Béliveau and Maurice Richard. The sweater had been given to Mr. Lafleur on the occasion of the official closing of the Montreal Forum in 1996.
Accompanying Mr. Lafleur at this special presentation at the McCord were his agent, Jean Roy; the McCord's Marc Bruneau, and Michel Lacroix, the voice of the Molson Centre. Mr. Lafleur recounted some of the memorable moments from his exciting career in the National Hockey League. The McCord also presented a preview of a documentary film on Lafleur's career, produced by Serdy Video for the Réseau des sports (RDS), and to be aired by RDS in May 2001.
The selection of objects from Lafleur's private collection and the 45-minute documentary film will be on view throughout Saturday and Sunday April 7 and 8. The McCord is proud to offer the general public this unique opportunity to meet a living hockey legend, and to view objects related to his heroic career.
The objects on display in the McCord's Atrium include trophies, among them, the Conn Smyth and Art Ross trophies, the commemorative plaque presented to Lafleur on the occasion of his 500th goal scored in the National Hockey League, a Stanley Cup awarded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1973, Lafleur's first pair of skates, a selection of his hockey sweaters, photographs, and various other memorabilia.
Guy Lafleur was at the McCord on Saturday April 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to meet the public and sign autographs. The McCord offered free admission throughout the day, in honour of this special occasion.
An Important Acquisition for the
McCord Museum
As a museum of material history and culture, the McCord is
actively interested in Canadian game and sport traditions, and
possesses a large and varied collection of historic sports
objects. Highlights of this collection will be displayed in the
McCord's Main Entrance during the weekend of April 7 and 8. The
objects on display include skates from the turn of the century,
snowshoes, a curling stone, and a hockey stick once belonging to
Guy Lafleur. Mr. Lafleur's donation today is a fitting and
welcome complement to the McCord collection, and attests to his
legendary status in the world of Canadian hockey.
With this event, the McCord wishes to demonstrate its longstanding commitment to the preservation and interpretation of all aspects of Canadian history.
