There will be all kinds of magic at the McCord Museum on Halloween weekend. Films, music and stories!
Friday, October 27
7 p.m. Special screening of The Phantom of the Opera (silent film, 1925, 78 minutes) with musical accompaniment by Ilya Poletaev, Assistant Professor, Piano, Schulich School of Music – McGill University
Saturday, October 28
Discover our selection of films about magic and illusion. Documentary filmmaking, animation and fiction for all ages.
- 10:30 a.m. The Illusionist by Sylvain Chomet, 2010 (79 minutes)
In French with English subtitles.
At the end of the 1950s, the success of rock and roll overshadows the acrobats, jugglers and other artists of the magic scene. An illusionist leaves the world of entertainment in Paris to try his luck in London. Eventually, he meets a young girl who transforms his world.
- 1 p.m. Houdini by Georges Marshall, 1953 (106 minutes)
In English without subtitles.
Tony Curtis plays Houdini in this fanciful film biography that follows the career of the internationally renowned illusionist and escape artist.
- 3 p.m. The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam by Ann Marie Fleming, 2004 (90 minutes)
In English without subtitles.
This documentary explores the world of Chinese and Western magicians. Ann Marie Fleming retraces the story of her great-grandfather, Long Tack Sam, a Chinese acrobat and magician who became one of the most successful acts of his time despite racism, poverty and other barriers. (Source: NFB)

- 10:30 a.m. Screening of the film Houdini by Cédric Babouche, 2015 (53 minutes)

An animated film for children that imagines the early days of magic for 12-year-old Harry, who later becomes the famous Houdini.
- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Workshop, ongoing
- 11:30 a.m. Spine-tingling tales for children, in French
- 1 p.m. Spine-tingling tales for children, in English
- 2 p.m. The Magician and the Illusionist, concert with Jean-Marie Zeitouni, conductor, I Musici
The McCord Museum and I Musici de Montréal invite young audiences to a multisensory experience on the theme of magic. With the help of vivid explanations by the conductor and the magician, Joe Culpepper, young spectators explore illusionism in a way that is educational, entertaining and encourages participation. Inspired by the McCord Museum’s impressive collection of magic posters, the concert will leave you with unforgettable moments.
- 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Harry Potter event with Gallimard.
Discover the fantastic world of J.K. Rowling. Take part in a big quiz game and taste our wizard snacks!
On Sunday, October 29, come in disguise! Prizes for the three most beautiful costumes!
