Introduction

Both modern and traditional, the photo album narrates our individual and collective stories and presides over our most precious memories.

George E. Mack (1887-1941) was the captain of the S.S. Nascopie. He commanded the ship from 1905 to 1927 (he later became superintendent of the Hudson's Bay Company). In this album, Mack focusses on the communities formed around trading posts and hunting grounds. A curious episode is the arrival by ship of a herd of Norwegian reindeer, accompanied by Laplanders who are supposed to introduce the animals into the Canadian North.
