This Other Eden

Canadian Folk Art Outdoors

This exhibition has ended.

An exhibition of Canadian folk art, displayed in a setting that brings to mind the great outdoors. More than 120 cheerful artifacts from the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s wide-ranging collection will surprise and delight, among them birdhouses, weathervanes, whirligig wind machines, decoys, and some of the truly droll representatives of the genre. Bizarre human forms mingle with animals of all sorts, including deer and moose, skunks, cats and frogs, and products of pure imagination.

This remarkable assemblage comes to life in a thematic display reminiscent of the surroundings of a rural home during the thirty-year period following 1960. With a final section on jigsaw sculpture and representative samples of today’s commercial Faux Folk Art, This Other Eden explores the Canadian garden as never before.
