Keys to History
When William Notman went to St. Albans, Vermont to photograph the local militia (see N-0000.73.11), he also recorded the students of the St. Albans girls' school. The occasion for the fancy dress is not know, but there is a wide variety of native costumes ranging in style from European to Chinese, and one girl is dressed in semi-military attire as Florence Nightingale.
