Following the recommendations of the engineer-in-chief of the Intercolonial Railway, Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915), all but three of the bridges built by this company were of iron. The one we see here is in Sackville, New Brunswick.
Completed on July 1, 1876, the rail line of the Intercolonial Railway joined New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec. The first lines had been opened in 1858 (between Halifax and Truro) and 1860 (between Saint John and Shediac).
