Description
This rare carving was made at the end of the 19th century by an artist of the Assiniboine Nation. Although commonly called a "dance stick", carvings like this one were used in a number of different ways by Plains cultures: to commemorate a brave horse that died on the battlefield, by a storyteller to recreate a battle scene or other important event or even "mounted" by a performer in the course of a special ceremonial dance.
