From 1850 to 1880, the commercial and industrial expansion of Montreal would gradually transform all areas of what we now call Old Montreal. Traces of the residential and religious past of the neighbourhood quickly gave way to "progress." The people of the time were proud of the commercial and financial buildings, with their more and more elaborate and sumptuous decor, which made Notre Dame and St. James Streets the most prestigious commercial streets in Canada.
