The Drawings of Christian Dior

This February, the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) and the McCord Museum have organized a full program of documentaries about Christian Dior and the world of fashion.

The Drawings of Christian Dior

Leading fashion expert and director Loïc Prigent portrays one of the world’s greatest couturiers. In the 1950s, Christian Dior reinvented the female silhouette. The bold lines of his beautiful drawings reflect 10 years of teeming creation. Corset wasp waists, exaggerated hips, full puffy skirts: the Dior style revolutionized post-war fashion. The era of rationing was over, and the inventor of the famous “New Look” caused controversy by unrolling yards of fabric to dress women.

From 1947 to 1957, there was “an explosion of femininity” on the catwalk. From the legendary “Junon,” a long beaded evening gown still made in his workshops for wealthy customers, to the iconic “Bar” suit, the couturier elegantly renewed his silhouettes from season to season. After a frantic succession of collections, the man who liked to describe himself as “a Norman peasant with a paunchy belly” became exhausted. Against the advice of his fortune teller, Christian Dior left for Italy in August 1957 for a spa cure and never returned. Two years before his death, he had taken care to hire the young Yves Saint Laurent to succeed him.
